Purpose: The prevalence of rickets is increasing worldwide in association with an increase in vitamin D deficiency. This study aimed to investigate the vitamin D profile of healthy school-aged children in a sun-rich country and its contributing factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 120 healthy children from 7–12 years of age who live in Jakarta, Indonesia. Their demographic status, sun exposure duration time, and lifestyle were recorded using a structured questionnaire. Serum calcium, phosphate, bone-alkaline phosphatase (B-ALP), and 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)2D3) levels were measured. The participants were categorized into vitamin D sufficient and non-vitamin D sufficient groups, and we analyzed variables that contributed to the 25(OH)2D3 level. Results: Of the participants, 73 (60.8%) were vitamin D sufficient, 45 (37.5%) were vitamin D insufficient, and 2 (1.7%) were vitamin D deficient. Sex, age, body mass index, Fitzpatrick skin type, daily milk intake, and clothing type were not different between the vitamin D sufficient and non-vitamin D sufficient groups. There were no differences in serum calcium, phosphate, and B-ALP between the 2 groups. Sun exposure time was significantly longer in the vitamin D sufficient group compared with that in the non-vitamin D sufficient group (511.4 min/wk vs. 318.7 min/wk, P=0.004), and this effect remained consistent on multivariate analysis after adjustment for covariates (adjusted odds ratio, 1.002; 95% confidence interval, 1.000–1.003). More participants in the vitamin D sufficient group did not use sunscreen (59 vs. 27, P=0.02), but this finding was inconsistent with our multivariate analysis. Conclusion: Despite year-round sun exposure, approximately 1 in 3 primary school-aged children had insufficient vitamin D level. Sun exposure duration was a major contributing factor. © 2021 Annals of Pediatric Endocrinology & Metabolism. |

Transient Receptor Ankyrin Member 1 (TRPA1) is an ion channel family protein that regulates pain sensation through sensory neurons' activity. This study's purpose to analyzes the DNA methylation and mRNA expression level of the TRPA1 gene in endometriosis and its correlation with pain level. Twenty samples of peritoneal endometriosis and endometrial samples were obtained from women with endometriosis, which was subsequently compared to 20 endometrial samples of women without endometriosis. The DNA methylation level of TRPA1 was analyzed using Methylation-specific PCR (MS-PCR) and ImageJ software, while the mRNA expression of TRPA1 was analyzed using qRT-PCR. Furthermore, the pain level was measured using the numeric rating scale (NRS) by interviewing all the women. This study showed that there was a significant difference in the mRNA expression of TRPA1 in peritoneal endometriosis. The TRPA1 was unmethylated in both peritoneal and endometrial samples in endometriosis. However, DNA Methylation level of TRPA1 in peritoneal and endometrial of endometriosis compared to normal endometrial were no significant difference. Additionally, there was no correlation between DNA methylation level and mRNA expression level of TRPA1 in all samples, along with the endometriosis-associated pain. © 2021, University of Malaya. Vitamin D levels are associated with improved immunity dysregulation to prevent worsening of COVID-19 patients. However, studies regarding the effects of vitamin D on COVID-19 patients are still inconsistent. This study aimed to analyze vitamin D supplementation's effect on the severity and mortality risk of COVID-19 patients. Search was conducted in seven databases on September 2020. Studies assessing the topic were included without study design restrictions. Four studies were included in this study. All reported risk of mortality, and three reported of severity degree. Two of the three found patients with vitamin D supplementation had a significantly lower risk of disease. One other found no significant difference, although a higher proportion of severe COVID-19 was recorded in the group without supplementation. Three of the four reported supplementation as a protective factor against mortality in COVID-19 patients. One study reported that vitamin D supplementation group had a higher mortality than the group without, although it has low validity and high risk of bias. In conclusion, there were differences in the severity and mortality risk between COVID-19 patients given vitamin D supplementation and control patients. Vitamin D supplementation is a protective factor in the severity and mortality risk of COVID-19 patients. © 2021, Journal of International Dental and Medical Research, All Rights Reserved. |

Background: Frailty syndrome is a predictor of all-cause mortality among older adults living in nursing homes. However, data on the prevalence of frailty among individuals living in nursing homes, particularly in middle-income countries, are limited. Thus, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of frailty and identify its associated factors among older adults living in nursing homes in Indonesia. Methods: This cross-sectional study of older adults living in six nursing homes in Indonesia was conducted between May and December 2019. Data on demographic characteristics, physical activity (Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly), cognitive status (Abbreviated Mental Test), nutritional status (Mini Nutritional Assessment Short-Form), depression (Geriatric Depression Scale), comorbidity, frailty state (Cardiovascular Health Study criteria), dietary pattern (24-hour food recall), handgrip strength, and gait speed were evaluated. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify factors independently associated with frailty. Results: This study recruited a total of 214 participants with a mean age of 73.68±4.30 years. The prevalence rates of frailty and malnutrition were 46.5% and 58%, respectively. The results showed that physical frailty was associated with malnutrition (odds ratio=4.23; 95% confidence interval, 1.730–10.380). Conclusion: Frailty was prevalent and strongly associated with malnutrition among older adults living in nursing homes in Indonesia. © 2021 by The Korean Geriatrics Society. |

Medical research indicated that narrowing of the retinal blood vessels might be an early indicator of cardiovascular diseases; one of them is hypertensive retinopathy. This paper proposed the new staging method of hypertensive retinopathy by measure the ratio of diameter artery and vein (AVR). The dataset used in this research is the public Messidor color fundus image dataset. The proposed method consists of image resizing using bicubic interpolation, optic disk detection, a region of interest computation, vessel diameter measuring, AVR calculation, and grading the new categories of Hypertensive Retinopathy based on Keith-Wagener-Barker categories. The experiments show that the proposed method can determine the stage of hypertensive retinopathy into new categories. © 2021. All Rights Reserved. |

Embryo spent culture medium has been intensively investigated, considering its promising feature for non-invasive bioanalytical techniques in in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Despite, isolating DNA from such samples is quite challenging due to its small volume. Carrier RNA is reported to exhibit DNA retrieval effects and commonly employed in various limited biological samples, but there are no reports regarding its benefit on embryo media. Therefore, we aim to evaluate the competence of cRNA on isolated DNA from embryo medium and analyzed its optimal volume as there are also no records respecting its ideal volume to obtain decent outcomes. Results showed that cRNA significantly increases DNA amounts in the cRNA treated group (p<0.001), but the D-4/D-5 medium yielded similar (p=0.684). Pearson test demonstrated no correlation between cRNA volume vs. total retrieved DNA (r=0.760, p=0.80), and Whole Genome Amplification (WGA) was shown to increase DNA in the treated group (p=0.022), but not in the untreated group (p=0.128). Additionally, electrophoresis successfully resulting in a thick and thin band of TH01 locus signifies the cRNA competence. In conclusion, our study suggests that cRNA addition is essential in embryo medium extraction as it increases initial DNA that crucial for downstream application. However, the optimal volume could not be determined in the current study since the initial amount of DNA in the medium is unknown. Obtained findings are expected to be a new input for subsequent research on DNA extraction. © 2021. All Rights Reserved. |

Background: The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is gaining interest as a possible agent in the etiology of periodontitis. Previous studies have shown controversy on whether EBV DNA in the subgingival periodontal pockets is associated with periodontitis. The present study aimed to seek the potential relationship between EBV and periodontitis. Methods: Samples were taken from gingival crevicular fluid using sterile paper points, and data on sociodemographics, oral health, and periodontal health were recorded. This case-control study of 118 participants included 59 subjects with severe periodontitis and 59 control subjects with mild periodontitis. Quantitative real-time PCR was used to determined EBV load. Results: EBV DNA was detected in 37.3% of the case samples and 18.6% of the control samples. There was no significant difference in a load of EBV DNA between severe and mild periodontitis (p>0.05). The observed load of EBV DNA was up to 4.55x10 5 copies/mL. The detected EBV DNA was significantly associated with the plaque index and the oral hygiene index (p<0.05). Conclusions: Although no significant association was found, EBV may play a role in periodontitis. The real-time PCR methods can be used to monitor the EBV load in gingival crevicular fluid. © 2021 Maulani C et al. |

BACKGROUND: Renal tumor biopsy is beneficial as it is capable of distinguishing between histological types of renal tumor; hence, it plays an important role in deciding the best therapy regimen. AIM: This study aims to evaluate the clinical experiences of renal biopsy in Cipto Mangunkusumo National Referral Hospital (RSCM), with both a percutaneous and open approach. It also aims to analyze the indications, results, intraoperative information, and complications of the two approaches. METHODS: This study was conducted using the retrospective cohort design; meanwhile, data were collected from RSCM from 1990 to 2019. The biopsy sample was taken using percutaneous and open renal biopsy, while comparative analysis was done between the two biopsy approaches. RESULTS: Data were collected from 33 patients that underwent renal biopsy from 1990 to 2019. Majority of the cases were diagnosed as unresectable renal tumor, while histological examination found clear cell carcinoma in most of the cases (73%). Furthermore, the open approach showed longer duration and higher blood loss compared to percutaneous technique with median 60 (30–120) versus 30 (5–60) min (p < 0.001) and 100 (5–650) versus 2 (1–5) ml (p < 0.001), respectively. In general, complications were reported to be low for both techniques. CONCLUSION: Based on the results, percutaneous renal biopsy has similar efficacy and complications rates in tumor sampling for histopathology together with open approach. However, there were significant differences in the duration and blood loss; hence, percutaneous biopsy is more favorable. © 2021 Luki Ertandri, Agus Rizal A. H. Hamid, Meilania Saraswati, Chaidir A. Systemic fungal infection can disseminate to the skin and require prompt treatment, making early diagnosis very important. This study describes the use of a simple, quick touch biopsy method for the diagnosis of invasive mycoses in patients with AIDS with cutaneous manifestations. We identified fungal infections in 24 of the 29 investigated patients. Histoplasma capsulatum, Cryptococcus neoformans, Talaromyces artroroseus, Aspergillus flavus, Candida tropicalis, and Malassezia sp. were visualized directly in samples obtained from cutaneous lesions and confirmed by culture and molecular examination. The results suggested that touch biopsy is a simple, rapid method for the diagnosis of systemic mycoses with skin dissemination. It can be performed using simple tools and provides quick results, allowing for early intervention with appropriate antifungal therapy. © 2021, International Journal of Technology.
