Introduction: Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been a growing trend in the field of medicine due to its broad range of application and is considered safe from bloodborne diseases. Furthermore, various studies have tried to optimize the use of autologous PRP through various preparation protocols, including PRP activation. However, most of the studies available have not evaluated the safety for intravenous delivery of PRP, especially autologous activated PRP (aaPRP). Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the safety of intravenous delivery of aaPRP. Methods: Blood was drawn from each patient and aaPRP was isolated through calcium activation and light irradiation. Each aaPRP was administered intravenously to all patients. Adverse events were documented and analyzed. Results: Six hundred eleven patients participated in this study with a total of 4244 aaPRP therapies. Quality control of autologous aaPRP showed no platelets present after both calcium activation and light irradiation. No adverse events such as allergic reaction, infection, and coagulation problems were observed on all patients over the course of the study. Conclusion: Our results showed that intravenous administration of autologous aaPRP is safe even in patients with various pathological conditions. © 2021. Purpose: The vitreous concentration of Hypoxia-inducible Factor-1α (HIF-1α) and Intercellular Adhesive Molecule-1 (ICAM-1) were related to the permeability of retinal vessels and the grades of macular edema in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Prior studies have showed that pan-retinal photocoagulation (PRP) is benefi cial in treating PDR. The aim of this study is to determine how pre-treatment with PRP before vitrectomy affect the vitreous level of HIF-1 and ICAM-1 in patients with PDR. Materials and Methods: A randomized clinical trial study was conducted to 22 eyes in Cipto Mangunkusumo National General Hospital, Indonesia. At the beginning of PRP, just before vitrectomy, and at 2, 4, and 12 weeks after vitrectomy, central macular thickness (CMT) was measured using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Undiluted vitreous humour was extracted during vitrectomy to obtain HIF-1α and ICAM-1 concentration. Results: In the control and the photocoagulation group, the average level of HIF-1α (ng/mL) were 0.152±0.015 and 0.164±0.033 respectively. The average level of ICAM-1 (ng/mL) in control group and pre-treated group were 17,840±14,140 and 27,027±10,452 respectively. No statistically signifi cant difference was seen in the level of HIF-1α and ICAM-1 between each group. The correlation between vitreous ICAM- 1 and HbA1c was statistically signifi cant (r=0.463, p=0.03). No signifi cant differences for CMT at pre-vitrectomy, or 2 and 4 weeks after vitrectomy. Statistically signifi cant difference was observed at 12 weeks after follow-up (p=0.049). The correlation between vitreous level of HIF-Iα and CMT in the control and laser group are r = 0.447 and r = 0.32, respectively. Conclusion: Laser photocoagulation 1-2 weeks prior to vitrectomy did not lower vitreous concentration of HIF-1α and ICAM-1. © 2021 Gazi Eye Foundation. All rights reserved. |

Purpose: The prevalence of rickets is increasing worldwide in association with an increase in vitamin D deficiency. This study aimed to investigate the vitamin D profile of healthy school-aged children in a sun-rich country and its contributing factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 120 healthy children from 7–12 years of age who live in Jakarta, Indonesia. Their demographic status, sun exposure duration time, and lifestyle were recorded using a structured questionnaire. Serum calcium, phosphate, bone-alkaline phosphatase (B-ALP), and 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)2D3) levels were measured. The participants were categorized into vitamin D sufficient and non-vitamin D sufficient groups, and we analyzed variables that contributed to the 25(OH)2D3 level. Results: Of the participants, 73 (60.8%) were vitamin D sufficient, 45 (37.5%) were vitamin D insufficient, and 2 (1.7%) were vitamin D deficient. Sex, age, body mass index, Fitzpatrick skin type, daily milk intake, and clothing type were not different between the vitamin D sufficient and non-vitamin D sufficient groups. There were no differences in serum calcium, phosphate, and B-ALP between the 2 groups. Sun exposure time was significantly longer in the vitamin D sufficient group compared with that in the non-vitamin D sufficient group (511.4 min/wk vs. 318.7 min/wk, P=0.004), and this effect remained consistent on multivariate analysis after adjustment for covariates (adjusted odds ratio, 1.002; 95% confidence interval, 1.000–1.003). More participants in the vitamin D sufficient group did not use sunscreen (59 vs. 27, P=0.02), but this finding was inconsistent with our multivariate analysis. Conclusion: Despite year-round sun exposure, approximately 1 in 3 primary school-aged children had insufficient vitamin D level. Sun exposure duration was a major contributing factor. © 2021 Annals of Pediatric Endocrinology & Metabolism. |

Vitamin D levels are associated with improved immunity dysregulation to prevent worsening of COVID-19 patients. However, studies regarding the effects of vitamin D on COVID-19 patients are still inconsistent. This study aimed to analyze vitamin D supplementation's effect on the severity and mortality risk of COVID-19 patients. Search was conducted in seven databases on September 2020. Studies assessing the topic were included without study design restrictions. Four studies were included in this study. All reported risk of mortality, and three reported of severity degree. Two of the three found patients with vitamin D supplementation had a significantly lower risk of disease. One other found no significant difference, although a higher proportion of severe COVID-19 was recorded in the group without supplementation. Three of the four reported supplementation as a protective factor against mortality in COVID-19 patients. One study reported that vitamin D supplementation group had a higher mortality than the group without, although it has low validity and high risk of bias. In conclusion, there were differences in the severity and mortality risk between COVID-19 patients given vitamin D supplementation and control patients. Vitamin D supplementation is a protective factor in the severity and mortality risk of COVID-19 patients. © 2021, Journal of International Dental and Medical Research, All Rights Reserved. |

Background: Frailty syndrome is a predictor of all-cause mortality among older adults living in nursing homes. However, data on the prevalence of frailty among individuals living in nursing homes, particularly in middle-income countries, are limited. Thus, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of frailty and identify its associated factors among older adults living in nursing homes in Indonesia. Methods: This cross-sectional study of older adults living in six nursing homes in Indonesia was conducted between May and December 2019. Data on demographic characteristics, physical activity (Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly), cognitive status (Abbreviated Mental Test), nutritional status (Mini Nutritional Assessment Short-Form), depression (Geriatric Depression Scale), comorbidity, frailty state (Cardiovascular Health Study criteria), dietary pattern (24-hour food recall), handgrip strength, and gait speed were evaluated. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify factors independently associated with frailty. Results: This study recruited a total of 214 participants with a mean age of 73.68±4.30 years. The prevalence rates of frailty and malnutrition were 46.5% and 58%, respectively. The results showed that physical frailty was associated with malnutrition (odds ratio=4.23; 95% confidence interval, 1.730–10.380). Conclusion: Frailty was prevalent and strongly associated with malnutrition among older adults living in nursing homes in Indonesia. © 2021 by The Korean Geriatrics Society. |

Medical research indicated that narrowing of the retinal blood vessels might be an early indicator of cardiovascular diseases; one of them is hypertensive retinopathy. This paper proposed the new staging method of hypertensive retinopathy by measure the ratio of diameter artery and vein (AVR). The dataset used in this research is the public Messidor color fundus image dataset. The proposed method consists of image resizing using bicubic interpolation, optic disk detection, a region of interest computation, vessel diameter measuring, AVR calculation, and grading the new categories of Hypertensive Retinopathy based on Keith-Wagener-Barker categories. The experiments show that the proposed method can determine the stage of hypertensive retinopathy into new categories. © 2021. All Rights Reserved. |

Systemic fungal infection can disseminate to the skin and require prompt treatment, making early diagnosis very important. This study describes the use of a simple, quick touch biopsy method for the diagnosis of invasive mycoses in patients with AIDS with cutaneous manifestations. We identified fungal infections in 24 of the 29 investigated patients. Histoplasma capsulatum, Cryptococcus neoformans, Talaromyces artroroseus, Aspergillus flavus, Candida tropicalis, and Malassezia sp. were visualized directly in samples obtained from cutaneous lesions and confirmed by culture and molecular examination. The results suggested that touch biopsy is a simple, rapid method for the diagnosis of systemic mycoses with skin dissemination. It can be performed using simple tools and provides quick results, allowing for early intervention with appropriate antifungal therapy. © 2021, International Journal of Technology. In the present study, the potency of rice bran as an antioxidant was examined. Rice bran is a by-product of the rice milling process, despite being a rich nutrient, it has limitations in food application. In this study, we used carbon tetrachloride-induced rats (CCl4) as a model of oxidative stress and examined the effect of extract IPB 3S rice bran supplement (RBS) on testis and liver endogenous antioxidant. The testis and liver were used as the representative organs which prone to exposure to reactive oxygen species (ROS). We used 150 and 300 mg.kg-1 Body weight (BW) of RBS. The Concentration of glutathione (GSH) in both organs was measured. All groups administered by RBS had significantly higher GSH levels compared to the CCl4 group, both in testis and liver. The dose of 300 mg.kg-1 BW RBS had a significantly higher GSH level in testis, while 150 mg.kg-1 VA RBS had a significantly higher GSH level in the liver tissue compared to the control group accordingly. Thus, the rice bran supplement enhances GSH levels in rat’s liver and testis which potentially has protective effects. © 2021 Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Ankara (FABAD). The increase in dementia incidence among the elderly is directly related to aging, which is associated with changes in bodily functions and other health-related risk factors. Alzheimer’s dementia is the most prevalent form of dementia, and individuals in the late stages are predominantly dependent on other family members. Therefore, it is important for families, as the closest support group, to recognize common symptoms early. Objective: To provide a family-friendly guide to the ten common symptoms of Alzheimer’s dementia. Methods: This is a descriptive survey-based research that included 354 families comprising elderly people (≥60 years) residing in Jakarta. The instrument aimed at identifying ten common Alzheimer’s dementia symptoms in Indonesia. Descriptive statistical analysis based on frequency tables was used. Results: The participant’s major characteristics were age ≥66 years (52.3%), female sex (70.3%) and primary school education (87.3%). The predominant symptoms experienced by 42.4% of the elderly included forgetting recent events and asking questions and narrating a particular detail repeatedly. The remaining 35.6% demonstrated signs of forgetting where an item was placed and frequently suspecting others of theft and concealment of personal items. Conclusion: The symptoms of frequently forgetting new events and the location of personal belongings are of particular concern for families, as they have a propensity to progress and interfere with daily activities. Therefore, the families of affected individuals are expected to identify this symptom early on and present the affected individual for screening or examination at a health care facility. © 2021, Associacao Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria.
